The Library of Congress

Today I went to the Library of Congress for the first time. I loved it. The rooms were beautiful and I couldn't stop taking pictures of them. I went there in search of photos of African Americans. The reading room was closed for that area of the Library so I just took pictures of the James Madison Building.

I Will Be Queen

This piece spoke Royalty to me. I love her dress with the collar and pendant she's wearing. She looks like a queen to me. Royalty crosses color barriers.

What Do You See When You See Me?

I loved creating this piece. The woman in the photo appeared confident and delicate at the same time. I can see her gentle spirit. What do you see?

Vintage Finds

Oh I had the most productive weekend in my quest for antique and vintage finds. I attended a Flea Market here in my area on Sunday and was quite thrilled with all the beautiful pieces of broken jewlry, rhinestones, and gems. I loved it. I can't wait to return again. I was even able to get a beautiful dresser for displaying my jewlry for less than $20.00. Oh yes! I'll be back!

Getting Started With Transfers

Fabric Photo Transfers are relaxing to me. When I'm transferring the photos I'm always so eager to see how they will turn out. The look and feel of transfers on fabric has a certain appeal to it. Here are a few samples of Gel Medium Transfers that I did on unprimed, coffee stained canvas. There was a problem that I ran into with the canvas though. Canvas is not woven closely together therefore the transfers don't adhere as well. I do appreciate the worn look however, and so I will continue transferring to canvas as an artistic choice use when creating layouts.

Beauty Found in The Eyes of the Beholder...

Beautiful images invite such imagination and wonder in the eyes of the beholder. I'm always in such an "awe" when I see African American women, children, and men in these old photographs. The way they look, their clothes, their beauty astonishes me. Images that don't display the negative stereotype that was normally associated with "Black People" in images from old. Images that demonstrate beauty, wealth, opportunities (albeit with limits), love, humanity and not just poverty and despair. Look at their clothing, the decor around them...especially the chairs. Look at their faces...they had a story to tell...I'm listening. Look at their posture and notice the beauty within each and everyone of them. It is absolutely beautiful to behold and bring back to the forefront beauty that has been long overlooked and possibly forgotten.

Vintage Finds

I've been shopping endlessly at thrift stores, flea markets, yard sales as well as fabric stores all in search of photographs, "doodads", broken jewelry, home decor fabrics and "fake flowers!" I have found so many wonderful items in my search for supplies and goodies. Oh what fun to find old treasures. This is an old purse that belonged to my mom who has since passed away. I love that it is "golden" like she was. I also have in my stash of goodies KC Willis Collage Camp DVD (new treasure)! Oh think of the possibilities.

VINTAGE PHOTOS

HELLO ALL,

I HAVE BEEN SEARCHING FOR VINTAGE PHOTOS OF AFRICAN AMERICAN WOMEN, CHILDREN AND FAMILIES. I THINK THE PHOTOS ARE BEAUTIFUL AND THAT THE PEOPLE IN THE IMAGES SHOULD NOT BE FORGOTTEN. I MAY NOT KNOW THEIR NAMES BUT THEIR FACES SPEAK VOLUMES. I WOULD LIKE TO USE THESE IMAGES IN MY ART AS I MERGE OLD AND NEW, VINTAGE AND MODERN WITH MY VISION OF THE TWO. IF YOU HAVE ANY IMAGES PLEASE LET ME KNOW. IMAGES CAN BE UPLOADED TO MY SITE. THANKS!
